DIY Hair Conditioner Recipe - leave in

This recipe is already on the blog under the Herbal Shampoo Bar post, as Leave in Hair Detangler.  However, I thought I would give a more comprehensive description with some pics.

You will need:
50ml spray bottle*
1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Rich Cream Moisturiser
warm water

*If you opt for a larger spray bottle adjust the moisturiser and water quantities to suit.

Step one:
Fill your spray bottle up with warm water, leaving room to add the cream.  Using cold water will make the cream harder to mix in with the water.  Using hot water will build up pressure when you shake and can cause the contents to explode.

Step two:
Add the cream to the bottle.  You can see in the below pic I've added around 1 teaspoon of cream to 50ml warm water.  I have used other moisturisers for this conditioner though I find Rich Cream works best.  If you have other moisturisers from our range feel free to try them.

Step three:
Apply the lid and give a stir with the straw part of the spray bottle.

Step Four:
Shake well until the contents are well mixed.  You will may some small lumps of cream here and there.  Shake well before each use.  These lumps will eventually amalgamate into the water.

Spray onto freshly washed wet hair before combing through to help get the knots out.

Note: you can add around 4 drops of tea tree oil if you want to use the conditioner and comb through hair with a head-lice comb.  Or you can add a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil for a nice scent.

My Journey to a New Body - The End of 6 weeks

Let's begin with stats:

START stats:
Weight: 60.7kg
Arms: 31cm
Chest: 94.5cm
Waist: 81.7cm
Belly: 86.9cm
Hips: 99.6cm
Thighs: 59cm

FINISH stats:
Weight 58.2kg
Arms: 30cm - not much change there
Chest: 92cm (lost 2.5cm)
Waist: 76cm (lost 5.7cm)
Belly: 84cm (lost2.9cm)
Hips: 97cm (lost 2.6)
Thighs: 56 (lost 3cm)

That brings my total loss over the 6 weeks to 17.7cm's and 2.5kg.  My BMI is now within a healthy range.  Amazing was a 2.5kg difference can make.

The pics on the left are how I looked at the start of my journey and the pics on the right are how I look today.  To be honest I can't really see much of a difference in the photos.  I'm straining my eyes to see the 17.7cm loss.  I can tell that my thighs are smaller and my bottom is more rounded.  My tummy is flatter, my waist more defined and I'm fairly sure I have less of a muffin top over the top of my bather bottoms.  What do you think?

My journey doesn't end here.  I will continue eating well and exercising and make more improvements over the coming months.  I want this to be my new life style so I can be fit and healthy for the rest of my life.

Thanks for following me on this journey.  It's been one of torture and revealing too much!  Though I am happy to have been on the journey and to share it with you.

My Journey to a New Body - end of week 5

Finished week 5 off on a low note, depending on how you look at it.  I only lost 100gms and .5cm.  However, I am bloated with water retention and what not so the fact that I've registered a loss of any sort is good.  Usually during my water retention moments my weight goes up by around 2kg.  That's not to say that I'm really 2kg lighter... I wish.

Along with my water retention I'm having a mad appetite increase and I'm really struggling with not eating every morsel of food in the house.  In particular I'm craving sweet things like chocolate and cookies (yum cookies!)... and I'm very lucky there are none in the house because I'm really not sure I could stop myself!

In a previous blog I mentioned I was bike riding and walking almost every night for 30mins over the past two years and still gaining weight.  What I've learned from doing this program is why they weren't working for me.  One: my food intake was more IN and not enough OUT.  Two: while being very dedicated to my walking and riding the exercise was not intense, varied or targeted enough to have any real impact.

One of my really low moments happened about a year ago.  I was invited to a ball and was so excited.  I planned on wearing my wedding dress [above] only to find that it didn't fit me any more.  I knew I had gone from a size 8 to a 10 and had fooled myself into thinking I hadn't also gone up to a size 12.  Going ball gown shopping was depressing.  I walk in, the assistant asked me what size I am, I reluctantly confessed to being a size 12.  She takes one look at me and says she'll fetch me a size 14.  Admittedly all the measurements on the gown websites confirmed I was a 14. Nonetheless while she was off fetching a 14 I popped the size 12 gown on and it fit me fine.  I purchase the gorgeous gown and attend the ball thinking I look like a princess only to see the photos and see a little blimp in the pics.  Who is this person?  How did I become her?

My goal now is to try on my wedding dress and the ball gown at the end of the six weeks and see how they fit.  My size 12 clothes are swimming on me and I now fit back into my size 10's.

I've only one week left to give it all I've got.  The program has been intense and not for the faint hearted.  I've had to work harder than I ever thought I could.  Then again I've seen people bigger than me on biggest loser running on sandy beaches carrying tires.  The human body is capable of much more than we give it credit for.

Natural Beauty - photo comp entry #5

This is my favourite rose. If only we could look at each other in the same way we see these roses. Everyone is truly beautiful...everyone is different to the one next to it....we don't compare one rose to another........and in a bunch...what a sight!!

Aesthetics

Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste, with the creation and appreciation of beauty.
* Wikipedia

If you have a teenager or young adult who is obsessed with their looks chances are they have used this word to describe their end goal.  Aesthetics is a common word among young adults these days with many striving to be aesthetically appealing in a world where beauty and sexiness are deemed to be "the be all and end all of existence".

And it doesn't just affect girls.  Guys are getting really big on aesthetics feeling that their slim non-muscular phsyicques are just NOT good enough.  Feeling they need to be ripped to get the hot girls and have sayings like "No pecs no sex."

Have you heard of Naso and his Facebook page for example?  His page is called Nasthetics.  Chances are your teen or young adult has heard of him.

Or perhaps you've heard of Zyzz?  He's a young man who was all about aesthetics and sadly he passed away at a young age.  Nonetheless he is still a hero for many young men wanting to achieve a ripped body like his.

Is there a teen or young adult in your life striving to achieve aesthetics.  How do you feel about this growing trend?

Natural Beauty - photo comp entry #4

As far as natural beauty goes, my opinion is you can't get more natural than a newborn baby's skin!
Before any products or even too much air & water get used.... how natural is that!

This photo is of my son, Joshua, at 4 weeks old.

My Journey to a New Body - End of week Four

(energy bliss balls made with medjool dates)

OK so this week was a bit of a fizzler.  A wash out.  I was sick for most of the week starting Sunday night.  We had 4 different exercises to do and we had to do all four, four times.  On Monday I managed to do all four exercises twice before having to stop from fatigue.  Tuesday I was in bed all day.  Wednesday was much the same as Monday and on Thursday I spent the day resenting.

Friday night I did my own cardio workout just to test my fatigue levels and did well, working out for an hour.  Saturday I did nothing and Sunday I went for a 3km jog at 7km per hour.  I felt great doing the jog although I was so tired afterward I ending up dosing off on the couch.

So my stats... well needless to say there were no dramatic changes this week.  Although I must be thankful for the fact that I didn't go backwards either.  Any loss is a miracle in itself.

Weight: 58.6kg
Arms: 30 - no change since last week
Chest: 92cm - no change since last week
Waist: 77cm - down .5cm
Belly: 84cm - down 2.5
Hips: 98cm - no change since last week
Thighs: 56.5cm - down 1.5cm

All up a loss of 4.5cm.  Not bad for sitting around most of the time feeling sorry for myself.

28 days down, 14 days to go until I have my 'ultimate body transformation'.

P.S. I should mention at this point in time that I feel great and I feel as though I look terrific.  I say 'feel as though' because what I see in the mirror is a shadow of my former self - yet last weeks photo didn't look all that different from day 1's photo.  All up I've only lost 2kg and a massive 15.2cm.  My tummy is flatter and clothes are starting to swim on me.  Not to forget I can fit into clothes that were slightly too small before.  I am getting there and it's a very exciting feeling!

Fluoride

Fluoride - there is a lot of talk about the dangers and toxicity of fluoride in our water and in our toothpaste.  After speaking with a scientist, here’s what Joli found out: There are different types of fluoride, 1. soluble fluoride (sodium, potassium & ammonium fluoride) and 2. non-soluble fluoride  (calcium fluoride).  Soluble fluoride was used during the war as chemical warfare to poison water.  This fluoride poison works by drawing all of the calcium out of the body to itself.  By adding calcium to fluoride this stops the need for fluoride to draw calcium to itself because calcium is already present in its chemical composition.  Calcium fluoride is the one added to our drinking water in small parts per billon.  Queensland water does not contain fluoride and experts claim that as a result of this Queenslanders have a higher rate of tooth decay.  Critics disagree. with these supposed findings.  Of course, there are also cases of people having too much fluoride causing fluorosis  (see picture below) of the teeth and bones.  For this reason it is recommended that children under the age of 6 not be introduced to fluoride toothpastes.  Sodium fluoride is the fluoride in toothpaste and according to experts is in such low doses so as not to be dangerous.  This fluoride is not one of the good guys, which is why they recommend not swallowing the toothpaste and keeping out of reach of children (who like to eat toothpaste) because if swallowed it can lead to kidney damage.

Ultimately the battle of ‘to fluoride or not to fluoride’ rages on with experts on both sides backing their theories and findings.

Which side of the fence are you on?

My Journey to a New Body - End of week THREE (3)

The half way point.

I worked out my overall stats in cms lost.  By the end of week one I had lost only 1.2cm.  End of week two I had lost a further 7cm.  Now the end of week three I have lost an additional 2.5cm.  Not really much however overall I have lost a total of 10.7cm and I am 2kg lighter.  Not quite my goal weight or stats... still I've three more weeks to go.

Current stats as of 7th May 2012.
Weight: 58.8kg
Arms: 30 - no change since last week
Chest: 92cm - down .5cm
Waist: 77.5cm - down 1.5cm
Belly: 86.5cm - up 1.5cm (don't know how or why?)
Hips: 98cm - down 2cm
Thighs: 58cm - no change since last week

Original Stats (you can view the start of my journey HERE)
Weight: 60.7kg (insert sad face here)
Arms: 12.5" / 31cm
Chest: 37" / 94.5cm
Waist: 32" / 81.7cm
Belly: 34" / 86.9cm
Hips: 39" / 99.6cm
Thighs: 23" / 59cm

Exercise wise I managed to jog the entire 5km last week.  My very first jog was around 3km though I stopped to fetch water and a cold cloth so it's hard to tell.  My second jog was 2.5km, third jog was 3.5km and on the fourth jog I jogged for 5km without stopping to walk.  In just a short amount of time I can feel my energy levels and my strength rising.  I am stronger and fitter.  Considering loosing weight is only part of my goal - my end goal is to be fit and stay that way - I'm well on my way to acheiving my goal.

Food wise I have been struggling the past few days.  Over the weekend we met up with friends and everyone was eating tarts and pizza bread and sandwiches made with super fresh soft bakery bread.  Watching them eat I wanted to join in.  Not that my salad wasn't enjoyable or filling.  It was.  I just happened to be more hungry than usual over the weekend and seeing others eat what I can't made me more hungry.  I had a bite of hubby's tart and it actually didn't taste as good as I thought it would.
I am allowed one naughty meal a week and I had my naughty meal on Friday when I went out to yum cha with family and friends.

It's a slow process and not happening over night.

21 days down, 21 days to go!

Ads, Lies and Video Tapes = False Advertising

There are no rules or strict guidelines regarding what advertisers can show and how they represent a product.

False advertising is everywhere you look.  From weight loss to fast food, from healthy hair to mascara.

[funny how Sarah and Jess are the same person]

E.G. ~ Computer generated images of before and after hair shots where the hair and the person have not moved an inch yet the hair is magically better.  No actual – true and real – before and after shots.

E.G. ~ Ab Circle Pro ads where a large man or a woman is on the machine and suddenly they become lean and buff before your eyes thanks to computer graphics and two totally different people.

E.G. ~ Light and Easy tell us that a family of 4 (mum, dad, 2 children) use their meal plan “for the same price as what we’d pay in a supermarket” and they’re allowed to tell that little white lie (or that a big fat lie) regardless of the fact that Light and Easy costs around $120 per person [I know this because I have a friend who uses Light and Easy].  Assuming it is cheaper for children that is still a cost of around $360 per week.  I know very few families of 4 who spend that kind of money on groceries each week.  If they do it also includes cleaning goods, nappies, dog food and all manner of other items not supplied by Light and Easy.

E.G. ~ Fast food always looks bigger and better and less greasy in ads.  In reality the food looks far less appetizing.

E.G. ~ Pro Active using celebrity endorsements such as Jessica Simpson, Katy Perry, Delta Goodrem and Vanessa Amorosi who all have gorgeous skin telling us that it worked for their ‘bad’ skin and will work for our bad skin.  It may well do wonders for acne skin however using celebrities who may have mild break outs on occasion doesn’t compare to  the severity and reality of acne.

E.G. ~ Mascara commercials where the woman is wearing false eye lashes and they're allowed to claim that the mascara is what is giving her lashes such volume.

E.G. ~ Weight loss photos where they have squashed or stretched a photo to make a person look fatter or skinnier.

E.G. ~ Not to forget of course all the retouching that goes on in the photographs we see.

* * *

People who work in advertising reasons that the consumer (us) know its all fake therefore it’s not wrong to use false advertising.

We may know it to be false however people still believe the end result is a FAIR representation of what the finished result or product will be.  Certainly the end result SHOULD be a fair representation of what the end result WILL be.

We WANT the same miraculous results.
What are you views of today's method of advertising?  Does it sucker you right in?  Do you think the method is fair to consumers or is it damaging?  Love to hear your views.
